The South African Krugerrand, known in Germany and in the German spelling Krügerrand, is today one of the most popular bullion coins in gold and embossed with over 57 million pieces or 48 million ounces worldwide the most traded gold bullion coin.

(adopted from Rand Refinery Limited)
The Krugerrand was minted for the first time in 1967, at that time. In a total of 40,000 units per year This continued until 1969, after which the rest of the Krugerrand increased from year to year continues. During 1970, there were about 211,000 coins, which came on the market, their number was in 1974, is already more than three million. But the coin was also subject to political influences. So it happened in 1986, prohibiting the import of Krugerrands in the then European Community and the United States, because in this way for sanctions against South Africa were carried out because of the continuing apartheid. This led to a sharp decline in production to a low point in 1995, when only 8,285 one-ounce coins were minted. Only with the lifting of the import ban in 1999, the number of marked Krugerrand coins again to still be the most sought after bullion coin in the world. Marked the coins of the of the South African South African Mint in the Rand Refinery Limited commissioned quantities. Until 1980, the Krugerrand was minted in only one size and weighing one ounce, equivalent to 33.9305 g were after 1980, also smaller denominations offered and today you get the Krugerrand in denominations of one ounce, half an ounce (16 , 9653 g), a quarter ounce (8.4826 g) and one-tenth ounce (3.3931 g).

The name of the coin is composed of the last name of the South African politician named for Paul Kruger and the South African currency, Rand. Paul Kruger was the son of German immigrants and President of the Boer Republic of Transvaal. He is considered one of the founders of the South African Republic, which he was president from 1882 to 1902. By Paul Kruger next to the Krugerrand and the Kruger National Park in South Africa is named because it was a great nature lover and animal lover all his life. He also had with his second wife Gezina du Plessis 16 children after his first wife and their child had died of malaria.

On the front of the coin features a portrait of Paul Kruger is seen. In addition, we read there the writing Suid-Afrika and South Africa. The obverse of the coin was designed by Otto Schulz, while responsible for the back Coert Steynberg is. The back is decorated with the national animal of South Africa, a springbok antelope. Right and left, there is an indication of the respective year mark in split notation at the top of the image is surrounded by the lettering and bottom FYNGOUD Krugerrand 1 OZ FINE GOLD.

Purely formal terms, the Krugerrand is a legal tender in South Africa, it is not used as such. The Krugerrand is unlike many other bullion coins no par value. Instead, its price is determined each business day on the basis of each new gold course.

Krugerrand coins have a grade of 22 carats. This means that one Krugerrand coin from 916.7 parts of gold per 1000 and 83.3 parts is copper and other admixtures. By adding copper get the Krugerrand coin a slightly reddish color, and do not scratch as easily.

The Krugerrand also has the peculiarity that by boycotting the late eighties some copies of the then lowered production now achieve interesting, beyond the value of gold collector values.
